Timewarp

Online quiz game

Travelling through time in Europe

TimeWarp is part of an exchange project between European schools (from Spain, Italy, France, Germany and the Netherlands) supported by the Erasmus+ fund. Stoneroos has been approached by this consortium to come up with a proposal for an online game in which both education as participation of the students plays an important role. Stoneroos was, besides being ICT partner, also responsible for the concept, design and branding of the game.

With the words participation and education in mind we started brainstorming and created an online quiz game where the students were responsible for the content creation.

To make this possible, Stoneroos developed a Content Management System (CMS) that enables students to add self-made questions to a database. These questions form the basis for the quiz game, which can be played as a tournament.

Concept

A storyline is created to let the students engage with the quiz game. The story is set in the future where the Intertime Crime Agency, I.C.A., is looking for new agents. I.C.A. agent Winnfield is looking for new recruits by testing the involved students on their knowledge about history.

CMS

Students were given access to the CMS through a login. In the CMS students are able to indicate to what level or category a questions belongs. To make sure the quiz game is diverse and interesting, the students are able to create different types of questions such as: multiple choice, questions with text, images, sound fragments or videos.

Besides adding questions to the database, the CMS also enabled Teachers to curate questions. With the curator function it was possible to check questions on grammer and mistakes and reject questions when needed. This was of course needed because a large group of young students were given acces to the CMS.

Quiz Game Tournament

We stated earlier that the content created by the students will be used for the final quiz game. Through a login a game master has the ability to create a tournament and invite schools. After the school received an invitation, they can invite their students to take part of the tournament. TimeWarp is an educational quiz game where students can answer questions from different time periods. The design of the game is futuristic and the look and feel of the game adapts to the different time periods of the game.

Achievements

Students were being encouraged to collect as much achievements as possible. Not only was it nice to collect them, the achievements were also worth points, which in turn resulted in a higher rank.

Ranks

We stated earlier that agent Winnfield was recruiting new agents for the I.C.A. At the beginning of each tournament every student started with the rank recruit. To promote to a higher rank students needed to collect points by answering correct and collecting achievements. Beacuse the focus of the game was more on participation and learning than on being better than others we created the game in such a way that if student did their best they would be somewhere in the top 80% of the possible ranks.

TimeWarp logo

As inspiration for the TimeWarp logo we looked at retro logo’s from new and old Hollywood sci-fi movies like Gravity, Interstellar, Blade Runner and Robocop. Font Exo is used in the final logo that appears throughout the game. With some font adjustments and a laser beam instead of the letter A the logo communicates that you are looking at a quiz game that is based in the future.

Final TimeWarp logo

Animated logo

We created an opening title sequence to draw the players into the world and story surrounding the game, putting emphasis on the time-travel. Glowing particles float through space before gathering and violently exploding. The TimeWarp logo slowly appears as rips in dimensional time and space show us glimpses of history.

3D Modeling

We decided to use 3D visualization for the creation of the agent Winfield character as well as the futuristic offices of the I.C.A. (Intertime Crime Agency). Agent Winfield was created as a military style commander overseeing the I.C.A. Winfield shows up several times throughout the game, informing players and updating them on their advancement. She was created with multiple facial expressions to reflect the players progress. The I.C.A. Offices were envisioned as a control room and place to send the agents back in time. By using futuristic shapes, lots of metal surfaces and minimal light sources we created a mysterious science fiction setting, which is used as a background to the game‘s menus.
